I guess it wouldn't be mentally ill, but developmentally delayed. As a musician (and student of Latin and Greek vocab, with me;), you know that to retard means to slow, and having had students and family who actually are DD, the I know that the word retard bothers me a lot. And, you've got me thinking about language use, and I'm sort of bumming out that I repeated the word that that got me socked. I told the story to illustrate the ignorance of my youth--but I hope nobody would read it and think I was too casual in the word use. Never would I use that word in such a way now.
